The gaps between GTA games — and the record-breaking GTA 6 drought
For a series this big, Grand Theft Auto has never kept a steady release schedule. In the early 2000s Rockstar shipped a new entry almost every year — GTA III (2001), Vice City (2002) and San Andreas (2004) landed in quick succession. Then the gaps started to stretch: nearly three and a half years to GTA IV in 2008, and over five years to GTA V in 2013.
Nothing compares to what came next. GTA VI arrives on November 19, 2026, a full 13 years, 2 months, 2 days after GTA V. That makes the GTA 5 → 6 wait the longest drought in the franchise's history by a wide margin — long enough that a fan who was a teenager at the GTA V launch is now well into adulthood.
Why so long? Rockstar spent much of the drought supporting GTA Online, which turned GTA V into an evergreen money-maker across three console generations, and shipping Red Dead Redemption 2. With GTA V still topping sales charts year after year, there was little pressure to hurry a sequel — and the wait only deepened the anticipation.
Use the picker above to compare any two releases, then drop in your birthday to see exactly how much of your own life was spent waiting. Aging from your teens to your thirties across a single GTA gap puts the drought in perspective better than any number can.

⏳ How long between GTA 5 and GTA 6?
GTA V launched on September 17, 2013 and GTA VI is set for November 19, 2026 — a gap of 13 years, 2 months, 2 days. That is comfortably the longest wait between two mainline GTA games in the series' history.
📊 What is the longest gap between GTA games?

🎮 Why did GTA 6 take so long?
