How your GTA generation is decided
There have been seven mainline Grand Theft Auto releases — from the original top-down GTA in 1997 to GTA 6 in 2026. Almost everyone has played several of them, so "your GTA" isn't simply the first one you touched or the newest one you own. It's the game that landed while you were the perfect age to fall in love with it.
That perfect age is roughly 13 to 16. Those early-teen years are when a game imprints hardest: you finally had the freedom to play for hours, the whole friend group was hooked at the same time, and the map, radio stations and characters got wired permanently into your memory. This tool takes your date of birth, works out exactly how old you were on every GTA release date, and finds the release you were closest to your mid-teens for. That game becomes your GTA generation.
Born in the mid-1990s? You were around 14 when San Andreas dropped in 2004, making you a San Andreas Kid. Born around 1999? GTA V in 2013 hit right in your teens, so you're a GTA V Teenager. Born from 2012 onward? You'll be coming of age as GTA 6 reopens Vice City — the first true GTA 6 Native generation.
Your badge sits alongside your human generation too — Gen X, Millennial, Gen Z or Gen Alpha — because the GTA you grew up with says as much about your era as any birth-year label does.
Frequently Asked Questions
🎮 What is a "GTA generation"?
Your GTA generation is the Grand Theft Auto that landed while you were at the most impressionable gaming age — roughly 13 to 16. That's the game whose map, music and characters got permanently wired into your brain, no matter how many GTAs you played afterwards.
🧮 How do you decide which GTA generation I am?
Enter your date of birth and the tool works out exactly how old you were on every GTA release date — from GTA 1 in 1997 to GTA 6 in 2026. Whichever release you were closest to age 14 or 15 for becomes your GTA generation and identity badge.
🎂 Why 13 to 16 and not when I first played?
Those early-teen years are when a game imprints hardest — you had the freedom to play for hours and the whole friend group was hooked at once. A GTA you first touched at 25 rarely defines you the way San Andreas or GTA V did at 14.
👯 Can I be both a San Andreas Kid and a GTA V teenager?
You'll always have a favourite, but this tool picks the single release you were closest to the formative age for. If San Andreas (2004) and GTA V (2013) both hit while you were young, whichever one landed nearer to your mid-teens wins the badge.
📅 What GTA generation are people born in 2010 or later?
Anyone born from around 2012 onward is the GTA 6 Native generation — they'll be hitting their early teens right as GTA 6 reopens Vice City in 2026, making it their defining Grand Theft Auto.
